Four border collies will patrol the city's 11 beaches to shoo away the waterfowl fouling Toronto's sandy waterfront.
This is the third year for the patrolling pooches. City officials say the dogs, as well as other measures to clean and groom the sandy shores, result in fewer days when the beaches are posted as unsuitable for swimming due to high E. coli counts.
Carol Guy, a parks supervisor who heads the waterfowl management program, said 85% of her work with the border collies is educating the public to stop feeding the geese, ducks and gulls.
Lou Di Gironimo, general manager of Toronto Water, said yesterday the city's beaches were open for swimming more than 90% of the time in 2007 -- the best year ever.
