A wind warning issued around 3pm cautioned that strong breezes gusting up to 90 kilometres an hour could cause damage. And it didn't take long for that prediction to come true.
A light pole snapped and blew onto the 401 from the McCowan overpass around 4pm right at the height of rush hour. It clanged on the pavement down below but somehow missed every car.
But it quickly became apparent other poles nearby were also swaying dangerously, forcing officials to make an announcement no driver wants to hear - the intermittent closure of the highway throughout the evening, so crews can check to make sure all the other metal structures are secure. At least three more are being taken down.
"It looks like a combination of the wind and corrosion on the base of these poles, and we're really fortunate that the one that came down actually landed between the east and westbound lanes where there was no traffic on the shoulder," confirms OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley.

This is right by where I work, so of course I snapped a couple of pictures of the action as I drove by.
